Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University is sponsoring a speaker series in Spring 2026 on “Challenges to and Opportunities for Sustainable Development in the United States and Beyond” to which interested CMU faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend.

These fireside chats will be hosted and moderated by Amb. Sarah Mendelson, Distinguished Service Professor of Public Policy and Director, Sustainable Futures.

Now well past the midpoint to 2030, the world needs to accelerate action toward sustainable development with intentionality, especially concerning justice, gender, climate, and equity.  But how? What is the role of local efforts versus global ones? What is the role of AI? How does work in cities differ from work in rural areas? Where are bright spots in the world on these topics?

Helen Bond, University Professor, School of Education, Fulbright-Nehru Scholar, Howard University, will focus an assessment through a Voluntary Local Review of Black communities in Cleveland, Ohio, April 16, 2025, in A301 Hamburg Hall, Heinz College from 12:30-1:50.
