Diversity, Equity, and Justice for Sustainability Working Group Launch

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 fully recognizes the essential role of diversity, culture, equity, and justice in integrating the economic and social aspects of development. The Working Group on Diversity, Equity, and Justice for Sustainable Development is formed to highlight the essentiality of integrating these key elements into the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Working Group on Diversity, Equity, and Justice will explore such questions as how can the SDGs, also referred to as the global goals be used as a prism to better understand and address intersecting forms of oppression? How can the Leave no one behind (LNOB) agenda help inform policymaking focusing on those furthest behind? The LNOB agenda not only entails reaching the poorest of the poor, but also focuses on combating discrimination and paying attention to root causes and systemic racism. Science, technology and innovation must be harnessed to promote equity, justice and sustainability. Access for minority groups should be prioritized, and solutions should incorporate diverse perspectives, including local and traditional knowledge, as well as community driven best practices and solutions based on science. The Working Group on Diversity, Equity, and Justice for Sustainable Development will explore these and other questions as they seek ways to localize the SDGS within communities furthest behind and contribute to SDG good practices, success stories and lessons learned in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The Working Group invites the participation of all, as its work is both participatory and transformative as development is unsustainable without cultural diversity, equity and justice. Forward.
